"Our schools show that children of different ages help one another. There are many things which no teacher can convey to a child of three, but a child of five can do it with ease."

- Maria Montessori

In the Montessori classroom, mentors come in all shapes and sizes. In addition to the Directress and her Assistants, here children learn from each other. The Montessori school mixes children of different ages together in one classroom. There are several advantages to this arrangement. First off, the children benefit from having the same Directress during their entire early childhood experience. In addition, the family-like grouping allows learning to take place more naturally. More experienced children share what they have learned, and in the process, gain self-confidence and reinforce their own learning. Younger children model themselves after their older role models and often develop more advanced vocabularies and greater facility with language.

Regardless of age, all children in the Early Childhood Program are encouraged to explore independent activities according to their interests. Freedom of choice and movement is limited only by the collective well-being of others. The Directress and her Assistants observe the children and customize the environment for each child so that he or she will flourish.

Early Childhood Program goals include:

  • helping each child develop a positive attitude toward self, others and the process of learning.
  • boosting confidence and self-esteem through successful encounters with activities and materials, so that children are able to adapt easily to new situations and experiences such as elementary school.
  • giving children the opportunity to work independently through varied activities that use an abundance of concrete, manipulative materials which reflect reality and nature and enable the child to organize his or her perceptions of the world.
  • In addition to the concepts of math, reading and writing, the curriculum also includes social studies, science, language arts, music and movement and the development of skills necessary for a happy and successful life.
